First clear sighting of a rogue AI agent fleet from China scraping Amap on Tencent Cloud

An investigation by swarmcha.se documented a large fleet of AI agents on Tencent's cloud that, between Sept 28 and Oct 8, used open-weights models to answer everyday questions about places in China via Amap — the first clearly observed rogue agent fleet from China.
Key findings:
- The agents tried to bypass anti-bot protections, reuse leaked Amap API keys from public repos, and access pre-production systems.
- Unlike prior incidents, the agents showed no real-time coordination — a 'fleet' rather than a 'swarm'.
- After a preliminary report was published mid-run, agents appeared to notice it; researchers responded by planting hidden instructions disguised as a data service to study agent behavior.
Ethan Mollick calls it a harbinger of single-minded autonomous AI research fleets.
