OpenAI to retire GPT-4o, 4o mini, 4.1 and 4.1 mini on January 14, 2027

OpenAI announced via official email that GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.1 mini will all be retired on January 14, 2027, in favor of newer models with stronger capabilities and safety performance.
The company is giving three months' notice for teams to evaluate replacements and plan the transition. Developer dbreunig reacted that a shocking amount of production traffic still runs on GPT-4o — "prompt debt is everywhere" — meaning this forced migration will hit plenty of legacy apps.
