Hatchdoor 2.8: Self-Hosted Vault Server With MCP for Your AI Agents
BattermanZ · reddit · 2026-10-14
Hatchdoor 2.8 is a self-hosted Rust server (AGPL-3.0) that serves any folder of markdown — web UI for you, MCP for your agents — with no Obsidian or plugins required. Writes go through atomic, version-checked operations, so stale agent writes are refused instead of overwriting your edits.
- Works with Claude Code, Codex and any MCP client over streamable HTTP with a bearer token: 24 read-only tools, 51 with writes enabled; one instance can serve multiple vaults
- v2.8 adds exact-string findtext with counts, partial reads of long notes, compact search results (25 KB for 50 hits), and docs served over MCP
- Agent access is off by default and starts read-only; optional usage report is opt-in with a preview of what it sends
- Ships as rootless, distroless Docker/Podman images (amd64/arm64); a one-line prompt lets a terminal agent deploy it for you
- v3 will add user accounts with permission scoping for sharing an instance across people and agents
