Cloudflare details the rare Hyperdrive MySQL caching bug fixed on the road to GA
Cloudflare Blog · rss · 2026-10-14
- Cloudflare announced GA of Hyperdrive's MySQL support and walked through 20 bug fixes made since the beta.
- Encoding pitfalls: the utf8 handshake is a deprecated alias for utf8mb3, breaking emoji (fix: utf8mb4); COMRESETCONNECTION resets charset to the server default, so encoding must be reapplied after every connection reset.
- The hardest bug: a top customer saw empty query responses 0.001% of the time, only on instances with caching enabled. Investigating the shared Client/Endpoint CDN cache and MySQL capability negotiation revealed mysql2 lacks CLIENTDEPRECATEEOF support, causing protocol desync and inconsistent cached bytes.
- A deep dive into MySQL connection/command phases, capability flags, and cache consistency — a practical reference for distributed connection pooling.
