Accessibility skill cuts AI-generated code cost by 58%, says experiment
AI Engineer · youtube · 2026-10-14
At AI Engineer, Jemima Abu (CAIS) ran a small experiment: the same Figma implementation prompt run twice — once with an accessibility skill — cost 58% less and finished in about a third of the time.
- She cautions this uncontrolled comparison doesn't prove accessible development is always cheaper
- The real failure mode: agents invent verbose custom components where native HTML already provides semantics, keyboard interaction and expected browser behavior, adding code and testing overhead
- Agents inherit codebase conventions: an inaccessible codebase teaches wrong patterns, and vague design prompts leave requirements unstated
- Recommendations: make accessibility a requirement from business decisions through QA; package explicit accessibility instructions into agent skills; prefer semantic HTML, use ARIA only where needed
- Automated checks leave gaps requiring human review; retrofitting accessibility at the end creates avoidable refactoring
