OpenAI revealed it discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden inside one of its offices. Using its own models to analyze the device and its origin, the company identified that a specific employee had planted it days earlier and referred the matter to the FBI, which made an arrest; the investigation is ongoing.
OpenAI says there is no indication the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee has been terminated.
