Intellectual output vs. presence: why meeting your favorite posters IRL feels disorienting
signulll · x · 2026-10-14
The author draws a distinction between intellectual output and intellectual presence. Intelligence can be demonstrated through artifacts (posts, code), but intellectual chemistry — thinking in real time, improvising, using analogies, developing ideas with others, genuine conversational rhythm — can only be experienced in person or in a podcast-style setting.
This explains why meeting people IRL rarely matches the experience of their posts, as if the internet bifurcated individuals into two different personas. People whose presence is as interesting as their output, the author notes, are extremely rare.
