Claude Code bug: 2 parallel Agent subagents OOM-crash VS Code extension host in under a minute
daled-manorhill · ghdev · 2026-10-14
A new issue in anthropics/claude-code (#101901) reports that on Windows 11 with VS Code 1.141.0 and extension 2.1.296, launching just 2 parallel background Agent subagents reliably OOM-crashes the extension host within seconds to 1 minute. In-flight agent work is lost and unrecoverable (agents return as stopped, "No reachable agents").
Three mitigations were tried and confirmed ineffective:
- Raising the V8 heap via argv. js-flags
- Persistent NODEOPTIONS=--max-old-space-size=8192
- Reducing MCP server count/weight
Repro: in a few-hundred-file TS/TSX monorepo, invoke the Agent tool twice in one turn with moderately heavy read-only research tasks, then watch renderer.log. Two independent reproductions show the same crash signature; the issue carries the has-repro label.
