AI Image Rehab: open-source local tool fixes grainy, blotchy images from repeated ChatGPT edits
Kiko_Production · reddit · 2026-10-14
A game developer grew tired of ChatGPT image edits accumulating grain, blotches, and weird light/dark fringes after multiple rounds, so they built AI Image Rehab, a free open-source cleanup tool.
- Runs locally with a browser UI (Python required); automatic cleanup needs no GPU and images never leave your machine
- Recommended workflow: automatic cleanup → upscaling → manual spot fixes, ideally followed by an artist touch-up
- Caveats: won't fix bad anatomy or inconsistent details, and over-smoothing can erase fabric texture and intentional grain — always compare at full size
- Tuned mainly on anime-style character art; code and before/after examples on GitHub
