Ed Zitron spars with Gavin Baker: how will OpenAI and Anthropic pay the compute bills?
edzitron · x · 2026-10-14
Ed Zitron and hedge fund manager Gavin Baker clashed over AI's "$1.4 trillion" of spending commitments. Baker pointed to unfunded MOUs with Asian supply chain and semiconductor companies (absent from OpenAI's S-1) that could be "pared back to $750b"; Zitron countered that the "$1 trillion wall" skeptics cite refers to actual compute contracts, not those MOUs, and pressed: how exactly will Anthropic and OpenAI pay for the serious parts — hundreds of billions in contractual commitments each?
