Claude Skill Turns Legally Owned Arcade ROMs Into 3D Browser Remasters With Original Code Intact

A MIT-licensed Claude skill, arcade-rom-3d-remaster, takes a MAME ROM you legally own (e.g. galaga.zip) and walks Claude Code through building a browser remaster: the original program ROMs run unmodified on an emulated board while only the picture is swapped for a Three.js voxel renderer and the sound chip output is re-rendered. Press O or V to switch back to raw cabinet sound or 2D view.

The author's hand-made look-alike didn't play the same, so the 3D layer only reads video RAM / sprite RAM and can't break the game. Claude Code built the whole Galaga reference: a Z80 core, ZIP reader, the 3x Z80 board, HLE for Namco 06XX/51XX/54XX chips, the WSG synth and the Three.js front end.

Key lesson: "measure, don't assume." Claude's sprite-rotation guess looked fine but was mirrored in 232 of 240 cases — caught by an IoU test. Audio-on made the emulator run 16x too fast due to a buffer-length bug. All pitfalls live in references/pitfalls.md.

Limits: Z80 core only, Galaga is the only end-to-end game, no ROMs bundled or downloadable.
