Humanoid robots at scale 20-30 years away: copper, lithium shortages and boomer retirements reshape the AI jobs debate
JHochderffer · x · 2026-10-13
Responding to a viral vision of capable humanoid robots arriving at homes by 2032, JHochderffer offers a detailed reality check:
- Technical ability: at least 10 years away, possibly far more.
- Manufacturing and distribution at scale: 20-30 years away. Converting even a fraction of cars to EVs took a decade, and we're already running short on copper, silver, lithium, and energy; new mines take over a decade to come online.
- Adaptation window: the longer it takes, the more people adapt. AI-driven growth creates jobs precisely as millions of baby boomers retire with too few young workers to replace them — the economy needs AI and robotics just to tread water.
- Work won't run out: even if robots handle cooking and cleaning, there is endless work to be done.
A substantive counterargument to near-term robot-accelerationist takes.
