A look back at Andrew Ng's legendary CS229: he joined Stanford in 2002 and later directed SAIL. His fall 2007 ML course (20 lectures) was released free online in 2008 via Stanford Engineering Everywhere, one of the first full technical courses a top university put online. CS229 became Stanford's most popular course with 1,000+ enrollments some years. Ng founded Google Brain in 2011 (the cat-recognizing network trained on 16,000 processors), led AI at Baidu, founded DeepLearning.AI — and that 2008 release seeded Coursera.
