Hybrid fine-tuned BERT + LLM pipeline lost its edge to new frontier models
rajistics · x · 2026-10-13
Intain's document-diligence workflow for asset-backed finance long relied on a hybrid pipeline: a BERT model fine-tuned on their data plus LLM API calls, which beat direct API calls on accuracy while balancing speed and cost.
But the newest frontier model reset the economics — the hybrid approach's speed/cost advantage vanished. The lesson: sustaining fine-tuning advantages is hard when foundation-model improvements keep recalculating the cost/speed/accuracy/thinking tradeoff menu.
