The Nokia Era of Intelligence: Why We Still Pay by the Token to Think
Cyborgized · reddit · 2026-10-13
A long essay draws a pointed analogy between today's token-metered AI economy and the 1990s telecom era, where plans charged per minute, per text and for roaming. Modern AI billing — input tokens, output tokens, cached tokens, context windows, reasoning budgets, usage allowances — replays the same economic logic in new language.
The core critique: platforms push users to wire in email, docs, calendars, repos and agents into a "cognitive operating system," but every retrieval, agentic loop and tool call can generate billable compute. The deeper the integration, the more valuable the system — and the more expensive to leave. The technology promises freedom; the business model sells permission.
