TERRA turns spatial transcriptomics into virtual biology; cancer samples in, ~200M cells expected
mo_lotfollahi · x · 2026-10-13
The TERRA team (Mohammad Lotfollahi et al.) reports that cancer samples have arrived for spatial transcriptomics, with every slide becoming training data for virtual biology — an estimated 200M cells. The bioRxiv paper "Multi-scale modeling of human tissues from spatial transcriptomics with TERRA" presents a method for multi-scale modeling of human tissues from spatial transcriptomics, with co-authors including Fabian Theis and Muzlifah Haniffa. Data generation is framed as the engine of virtual tissues and virtual patients, with upcoming multimodal models to be trained on it.
