MIT linguist's Mt. Tam essay: fearing running out of time more than death
nitarshan · x · 2026-10-13
MIT linguist Kamile Lukosiute published a personal essay, On Mt. Tam, describing a trail-running fall that left a 4cm V-shaped gash on her knee. While ER techs cleaned the wound, she realized her discomfort came from confronting her own fragility and mortality. Medics told her fearing death means enjoying life, but she writes that she fears running out of time more than death itself — and that the better her odds of outsmarting death become, the less time she feels she has left, an implicit nod to AGI timeline anxiety among frontier researchers.
