Reinventing the wheel: hand-rolled upscaling for tiny retro-console pixel sprites
ssh4net · x · 2026-10-13
Developer ssh4net shares a 'reinventing the wheel' exercise: designing a pixel art upscaling approach that works with extremely small retro-console sprites.
The attached image shows an upscaled sprite annotated with red, blue, green and magenta lines marking contours, edges and internal structure — a geometric analysis and reconstruction pass over a very low-resolution sprite. Such tiny assets are a blind spot for generic image super-resolution models, so the author hand-rolls rules instead of applying off-the-shelf ones.
