Sentry founder: complexity is in database and storage, not the language
zeeg · x · 2026-10-13
Sentry co-founder David Cramer pushed back on the claim that Sentry could be replaced with a single AI prompt. He noted Python's memory/CPU inefficiency is only part of why Sentry needs many requests (ingest already uses lots of Rust), and that nearly all the real complexity and cost lives in the database, storage, and querying — 'all IO and some UI'.
His take: infrastructure software has to handle many unfun situations and can't be vibe-coded into existence. If cost is the concern, tune sampling instead — for most teams, Sentry's cloud is cheaper than self-hosting, and the ROI of building your own isn't there.
