Ex-Google UX researcher: Meta and OpenAI use dark patterns to drive personal agent adoption
SpiritRealistic8174 · reddit · 2026-10-13
Ashley Striblet, PhD, a former Google UX researcher, studied personal agent products like ChatGPT's dot and Meta's Muse and identified two emerging "standard dark patterns":
- Agentic over reach: agents constantly pitch what else they can do on your behalf, blurring onboarding and engagement hacking.
- Maximizing data collection: agents recommend use cases that push users to grant more access and share more personal data, without highlighting the added risk.
Her argument: the norms for personal agents are being set right now, so users should push back — turn off data sharing for AI training and limit agent access to financial information.
