OpenAI fires three safety researchers who say safety advocacy was the real reason
TheZvi · x · 2026-10-13
OpenAI fired safety researchers Tomek Korbak, Mikita Balesni and Jasmine Wang, ostensibly for 'mishandling sensitive company information.' In an open letter, the three say they were actually fired for safety advocacy and call on OpenAI to commit to open discussion and safety auditing. OpenAI claims an additional undisclosed breach of trust; most outside observers side with the researchers. Korbak's own prior tweet praising OpenAI's openness, with a Community Note noting his firing three weeks later, adds irony.
