NeurIPS position paper warns generative molecular dynamics evaluation is misleading the field
FrankNoeBerlin · x · 2026-10-13
Frank Noé and colleagues shared their NeurIPS 2026 Position Track paper Looking Under the Streetlight: Evaluation in Generative Molecular Dynamics (arXiv:2610.12518).
- Core argument: the GenMD community's evaluation practices are structurally misaligned — models can match reported metrics while being arbitrarily wrong on what they actually claim to solve.
- Why: ground truth (exhaustive MD on target systems) is computationally prohibitive, which is the very reason the field exists; inaccessible truth pushes evaluation toward convenient proxies that harden into norms.
- Risk: over-claiming advantages over classical baselines.
- Proposal: concrete observables, reporting standards, and computational and experimental benchmark designs, before today's conventions calcify.
