Open-source WTFM plugin makes Claude Code auto-write user docs with screenshots
SimonMX · reddit · 2026-10-13
A developer released WTFM (Write the Fing Manual), an open-source (Apache 2.0) plugin for Claude Code and Codex that automates end-user documentation — the part AI coding tools handle worst, since guides need real screenshots of every step.
How it works:
- Reads your routes, templates and controllers to derive the actual steps and real button labels
- Rebuilds each screen from your own markup and CSS, rendering PNGs in headless Chromium — the app never has to run
- Verifies every step and screenshot against the source before saving
- Outputs a Markdown file with images, placed in your repo
A guide takes minutes, runs on your existing Claude Code/Codex subscription, requires no account, and nothing leaves your machine. Tested on Elixir, Rails, Angular, SvelteKit and Next.js codebases, with a real demo on a clone of Plausible Analytics. WTFM's own docs were written by WTFM — a useful dogfooding loop. It's the free side of a hosted help-centre product in progress; publishing is the only optional paid route, and the Markdown stays yours.
