We are the last generation to think alone: AI is a workspace for reasoning itself

A widely shared essay argues we are the tail end of humanity's default mode—thinking alone:
- Every human breakthrough happened inside one skull at a time; collaboration was always turn-taking
- A child born today will grow up with a "second mind": no ego, no impatience, unlimited re-explanations
- The analogy is externalized memory: writing freed the mind from holding everything, and the freed space went to deeper reasoning—the species didn't get smarter, it accessed more of its existing intelligence
- AI externalizes something further up the chain: reasoning itself. Offloading thread-tracking changes the complexity you can work through, like pencil and paper for mental arithmetic
- Conclusion: AI is "a workspace for thinking itself," and the generation growing up inside it is unpredictable because "we are the control group"
