Claude now leads 26% of Anthropic's model R&D, up from under 1% in February

Air Street Capital's state of ai report cites Anthropic's internal automation index: the share of model R&D tasks rated "AI leads" — Claude completing most of a task from a high-level prompt with human supervision — rose from under 1% in February 2026 to 26% in August. Over 90% of measured work now involves substantial AI collaboration or leadership, though none is fully autonomous. Nathan Benaich frames the next question as whether agents can develop scientific taste: choosing experiments, spotting promising results, and knowing when to quit.
