NYC coffee shop spot check: only 6 of 22 laptops used AI, all ChatGPT
thedealdirector · x · 2026-10-12
Two data points on how early the AI pivot still is: a coffee-shop survey of 22 laptops in NYC found 16 people working entirely by hand and 6 using AI—all ChatGPT in a browser, nobody on Claude, 5 of 6 on the free plan. OpenAI previously disclosed under 20% of paid users had ever used reasoning when GPT-5's auto router launched. Air Street Capital data adds Codex adoption is 97.9% among OpenAI staff vs 17.3% organizational and 0.7% individual users, with 8h+ task share rising from 2.1% to 25.6%. Frontier usage remains limited to 3-5% of knowledge workers.
