Dev used Claude Code agents to turn Quake (1996) into a first-class VR experience

Developer vittorioromeo released Quake VR: UNLEASHED, a free open-source VR mod that goes far beyond a stereo-camera port: weapons are held and aimed by hand, reloaded manually and holstered on the body, with melee, parrying, ledge climbing, physics props, and ragdoll enemies you can shove, judo-throw and dismember. It plays the original campaign, all official expansions and custom maps.
Tech details
- Heavily modified Ironwail fork with the VR layer kept isolated from upstream
- OpenXR, tested on Quest 3 via Virtual Desktop
- Box3D physics for ragdolls, props and "active" ragdolls that stumble, brace and paddle
- Gameplay stays in QuakeC (fteqcc) with new builtins, so mods/maps keep working
- ericw-tools integration for relighting and baking
Agent workflow: most code over recent months was written by Claude Code agents. He tests in-headset and records voice notes; a local Whisper transcription feeds a coordinator agent that splits tasks and spawns worker agents in separate git worktrees. Each worker builds and verifies its change with a headless "mock VR" harness (scripted hands/head/controllers); the coordinator rebases, builds, smoke-tests and ships, with agents reviewing each other's merges. The author handles code review, design decisions and feel/comfort testing.
