pi author: agent self-modification is really user-initiated, agents don't need to rewrite their harness
lucasmeijer · x · 2026-10-12
Responding in the "Monday Meditations" chat with @badlogicgames and @mitsuhiko, @pidotdev argues "self-modifying" is a weird term: in pi, it's always the user who wants new behavior and pi writes it for them — very user initiated. He finds it hard to imagine scenarios where an agent would want to modify its own harness. Context: lucasmeijer contended agents can simply write external programs with an LLM in a while loop instead of self-modifying.
