Skeleton prompts in English? LASEF study finds language choice is context-dependent
HyeonSeok Lim · hf · 2026-10-12
Researchers from ETRI and KAIST propose the Language-Aware Skeleton Exploration Framework (LASEF) to study how skeleton-language choice affects multilingual mathematical reasoning.
- Prior skeleton-based reasoning work largely assumed an English-centric setting; this study spans math benchmarks, model scales, and languages
- English skeletons yield a small positive tendency on average, most visible for smaller models and low-resource languages — but few language-level gains survive correction, and English is not universally optimal
- Combining greedy decoding, multi-rollout evaluation, translation ablation, and cross-benchmark validation, the authors identify three patterns: directionally consistent, evaluation/benchmark-dependent, and asymmetric negative effects
- These effects cannot be fully explained by generation quality alone
- Conclusion: skeleton language is a context-dependent design variable; all resources are open-sourced at github.com/lhsstn/LASEF
