Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has released the full 32-chapter sci-fi novel Snowmoon, and developer devanshmehta published a detailed readthrough after spending a weekend on it.
Core premise and concept
- The novel answers Vitalik's earlier point that too many crypto people fantasize about founding their own country without thinking about what would actually be different in it.
- The quoted tweet explains the book's foundational concept, the Coordination Quotient (CQ) — an invention of Vitalik's with no prior literature. CQ is a cure for the prisoner's dilemma and tragedy of the commons: a high-CQ community can defy its Nash equilibrium, choosing collective interest even when individuals are incentivized to act selfishly.
Geopolitical setting: three major powers — the Arctic Empire (Russian expansionism × American exceptionalism), Veridia (European egalitarianism × cryptographic bureaucracy), and Dzego (Ukrainian resistance × Asian ingenuity).
Ideas from the book (excerpted screenshots)
- A dialogue on the "cycles" of soft societal traits (disaster → heroism → prosperity → complacency → disaster; technocracy → democracy → chaos → strongman) versus ever-compounding economic output; the rebuttal argues health, productivity, and education also compound on each other — the principal eigenvector is multidimensional.
- A warning about a fragile world: modern robots and surveillance make consolidated global power potentially irreversible for the first time. If anyone locks in control, the dimensionality of humanity's possible futures is permanently constricted; a superweapon mistake could destroy the living world. Only an interstellar-scale civilization becomes too big to fully control — until then, humanity sits in a fragile window.
The author sees the novel's impact as hyperstition: pre-narrating the world we should build with the tech we've developed.
