StoryCAD 4.3 adds a restrained fiction AI assistant that only touches your outline
lmoroney · x · 2026-10-12
StoryCAD, outlining software for fiction writers, released version 4.3 on Oct 2 with an optional AI assistant called Collaborator, in a free beta capped at 25 testers.
The design philosophy is deliberately restrained: the AI does one small job at a time — turning a story idea into a premise, or filling in a character's flaw and backstory — then waits. You accept, skip, or retry, and it asks before replacing anything you wrote. It works only on the outline; chapters, scene prose and dialogue stay with the author. It also flags outline gaps, like a story problem with no protagonist.
The author suggests applying the same habit with any tool: ask for five possible flaws for your protagonist, pick the one that surprises you, then write the scene yourself.
