HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette are using Claude and ChatGPT to email literary agents, write publicity and back-cover copy, design cover art and marketing materials, and even draft rejection letters. AI use among authors is also rampant. Exposed cases like Hachette's 'Shy Girl' and Macmillan's 'Call Me, I'll Hide the Body' are 'just the tip of the iceberg'—one editor says every imprint has a story of an esteemed author whose book was canceled over blatant AI use, without it ever making the news.
