AI Agent Does CAD: KiCad MCP Reads Mounting Holes for a Robot Build
burhop · x · 2026-10-12
burhop shows an AI agent (SteveCAD) doing real mechanical design: from simple blocks and holes to a linkage mechanism, with geometry inspection measuring a nominal 0.4mm axial gap and 0.2mm radial pin clearance, plus printability screening that flagged an error and kept it in the review workflow.
The screenshots reveal an engineered process: the agent uploaded Raspberry Pi's CM5 STEP model, used KiCad MCP to read the official IO board's mounting-hole locations to drive the stationary electronics bay, and saved a KiCad usage guide alongside the SteveCAD guide so future agents can reuse verified steps. Next, the author plans to burn through his pile of motors, servos, Pis and Arduinos on AI "maker" projects.
