VFX artist: Blender's 20-year failure on realistic characters let AI video take over
blackSeedsOf · reddit · 2026-10-12
A VFX artist argues on Reddit that traditional 3D tools' long-standing failure at realistic character animation is paving the way for AI video's takeover: after 20+ years, Blender still lacks fast, physically accurate character deformation, and Houdini and Maya fare no better — setups take ages and still fail to produce convincing human faces. AI video, he writes, already beats polygon-based animation output.
He believes CGI studios' solutions remain too time- and hardware-intensive, wonders where Blender and similar tools will be in 2-3 years, and asks what happens to film, games, and VFX studios if no answer emerges.
