Fold2Reason: training LLMs on protein structures to teach geometric common sense
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-11
A paper takes a clever angle on post-training: LLMs struggle with spatial/geometric common sense because human web text rarely grounds them in strict multi-dimensional physics. Fold2Reason uses solved protein structures—thousands of rigid, verifiable topological facts each—as a reasoning teacher, training on both structural Q&A and continuous 3D coordinate decoding. It folds proteins far better than base Qwen3.5-9B, and out-of-domain tests on 10 standard reasoning benchmarks reportedly show transfer gains.
