Kirkus Reviews gave a favorable early review of Toby Walsh's The Shortest History of AI (Nov 4), calling it "an entertaining and concise tour of the rapidly developing domain of artificial intelligence." The UNSW AI professor's book distills six essential ideas of AI: it reaches back before the 1956 Dartmouth workshop to Babbage, Ada Lovelace and Turing; uses tic-tac-toe, chess and Go to trace early computer research while noting games are an imperfect analog of human intelligence; and covers the path from industrial robots and self-driving cars to ChatGPT, neural-network approaches, and the funding-driven "AI Winters."
