Gaussian splatting + webcam makes websites look 'too real', raising privacy questions
RileyRalmuto · x · 2026-10-11
Developer fojcik shared an experiment combining Gaussian splatting, MediaPipe, and three.js to make a website look "a bit too real". The effect requires camera access and enables striking visuals. RileyRalmuto amplified it, calling it "sick", but flagged the unresolved privacy question: how do you prove to users that camera data stays local and isn't used for tracking? He argues some user hesitancy around cameras is inevitable, even as the possibilities feel magical.
