Figma's Dylan Field: AI lowers the floor but not the ceiling, and 'slop' keeps moving
a16z · x · 2026-10-11
Figma founder Dylan Field shared his view on AI and craft in a podcast interview:
- The floor drops, the ceiling doesn't: He corrected his own line that "AI will lower the floor and raise the ceiling" — in reality AI democratizes making things, but hasn't changed the upper bound of the best work.
- AI excels at verifiable domains: Math first, cybersecurity maybe second; design, with no single right answer, remains where human judgment matters.
- The definition of slop keeps drifting: Content called slop today wouldn't have been a month or two ago — as models improve, the bar rises.
- Craft reflects thinking: The care you imbue shows through; AI sets a lower bound you must exceed, but you define the ceiling.
