ComfyUI crash leaves unkillable Python process locking 42GB VRAM via GPU kernel deadlock
Traditional_Bend_180 · reddit · 2026-10-10
A Reddit user reports that when the ComfyUI desktop app crashes during heavy workflows, it leaves a zombie python.exe process bound to port 8188, holding 42GB of RAM/VRAM. Standard tools fail: taskkill /F /PID and PowerShell Stop-Process -Force both return "There is no running instance of the task."
Attempting to reset the NVIDIA GPU via Disable-PnpDevice fails with HRESULT 0x80041001, pointing to a driver-level deadlock in nvlddmkm.sys at the Windows kernel. Environment: Windows 10/11 (Build 26300) with ComfyUI Desktop. The only current workaround is a full system reboot; the thread is still seeking a better fix.
