A DM built an entire TTRPG Obsidian vault with Claude Code: theme, plugin, NPC pipeline
thimblebump · reddit · 2026-10-11
An over-prepping dungeon master used Claude Code to turn an Obsidian vault into a full TTRPG campaign system:
- A custom Obsidian theme, Lore by Lamplight, plus a companion plugin adding table tools to popular TTRPG plugins like Fantasy Statblocks and Initiative Tracker.
- An NPC creation pipeline: from a one-line prompt ("a firbolg mossman druid in the woods"), Claude checks world state and canon lore files to write personality, voice, motivations and secrets, then n8n workflows roll traits, build the note from a template, and generate portraits via the OpenAI image API with a fixed style prefix so every character looks like the same cast.
- A home page with a fantasy calendar: each in-game day splits into four parts, weather is rolled per segment from regional tables and only changes one step at a time; results render as animated banner art with sound, plus seasons with their own art and a dark/light mode that swaps images.
- Generated NPCs get auto-tagged and filterable in a big overview.
The author also offers free character generations using a detailed description template.
