Brian Holt sold his 42U homelab — a Framework Desktop plus coding agents does more

Engineer Brian Holt compares his two homelab eras. His first setup — a full 42U rack with a three-node Proxmox HA cluster, backup server, two gaming PCs as a GPU inference pool, NAS, and networking gear — was fun but a "huge waste of money" with very low value per dollar, and he sold nearly everything when moving.
On a whim he later bought a Framework Desktop and paired it with coding agents, which he says has been "magic": he now constantly builds genuinely useful personal software for himself, family, and friends. His takeaway: homelabs are worth it, but you need far less hardware than you think — one small machine plus an agent toolchain beats a rack. Full config details in his blog post.
