Nature Microbiology paper: bacteria regulate collective behavior by mechanosensing cell-cell collisions
NikoMcCarty · x · 2026-10-10
An open-access Nature Microbiology paper (published Oct 6, 2026) by authors from EPFL and collaborators (Laure Le Blanc, Giona Cattaneo, Alexandre Persat, et al.). Using live imaging, single-cell tracking, and simulations, the study shows Pseudomonas aeruginosa regulates collective order by mechanosensing cell–cell collisions: collision-induced reversals suppress collective alignment in dense populations, enabling adaptive surface exploration, while non-reversing mutants stay locked in cohesive structures. The paper has drawn 6,000+ accesses and 66 Altmetric.
