PageIndex: open-source vectorless RAG that reasons through long PDFs as tree indexes
solyarisoftware · x · 2026-10-10
PageIndex is an open-source (MIT) RAG project that replaces vector similarity search with reasoning-based retrieval for long, complex PDFs. It builds a hierarchical tree index per document, then lets an LLM navigate the tree to find relevant sections — no vector DB or chunking required. It offers a local SDK mode (index, retrieve, and chat with your own LLM key) and agent integrations for OpenAI Agents SDK and Claude Agent SDK. The motivation: "just use vector search" gets fragile on long documents, while tree-structured reasoning yields more document-grounded answers.
