Mathematicians stunned as OpenAI's Quasi-Riemann solutions rediscover their signature tricks
ctjlewis · x · 2026-10-10
After OpenAI's October 6 announcement, the Proofs and Prompts site gathered 100+ signed reactions from mathematicians capturing the community's gut response:
- Tim Santens: the results are "almost unbelievable" — Quasi-Riemann was complete science fiction; mathematics as a discipline faces massive transformation.
- Roman Sauer: his personal trick from ergodic theory (replacing manifolds with measurable foliated objects), used in papers on macroscopic scalar curvature, now appears in OpenAI's "deeply creative" solutions to problems 207 and 335 — two wildly different problems. He's stunned and concludes mathematicians cannot defensively narrow their focus.
The collection stays open for further contributions, signed by name only to show the community stands together.
