900 mathematicians urge slowing AI math; Dave Shapiro calls it 'extremely selfish'
Kyrannio · x · 2026-10-10
About 900 mathematicians signed a letter urging AI labs to slow down AI's math capabilities to protect their jobs. Dave Shapiro pushed back: unlocking the equivalent of a billion Fields Medalists would bring benefits—chips, medicine, fusion—dramatically outweighing the costs, saving millions of lives. He also notes there was a 0% chance any lab would slow down anyway, making the letter moot and, in his view, "extremely selfish."
