Google researcher: attention is one map insert and one lookup per token
moultano · x · 2026-10-09
moultano offers a stripped-down intuition for attention: abstract each component as an arbitrary function, and each token performs one map insertion and one map lookup, with the functions swapped for parallelizable, gradient-friendly ops. This explains why models attend to seemingly useless things like end-of-string delimiters and why adding arbitrary unattached key-value pairs helps — they're just new places for the model to stash and retrieve data.
