Frontend dev vibe-codes 110k lines of Rust with Claude Code to build open-source Fences alternative
daweii · reddit · 2026-10-09
A frontend developer with zero Rust experience shipped PecoFence, a free open-source Fences alternative for organizing the Windows desktop, written entirely by Claude Code: 110k lines of Rust across 50+ PRs, now on the Microsoft Store with a 10-language site and a pecofence-cli that lets Claude control desktop organization via natural language. Notable lessons: have the model research and write a 100k-char plan with decision points first; make it self-verify via screenshots and scripted drag tests (which themselves caused chaos, minimizing all windows mid-game); and a 4ms-vs-1s perf dispute resolved only when the model read the user's logs and realized it measured a different code path. Repeatedly asking "do we actually need all this?" proved key to pruning bloat.
