Karpathy: 'Prompting is going away' — Graphs are the end state of the LLM → Agents evolution
VeryWellVersed · x · 2026-10-09
In a new one-hour course, Andrej Karpathy lays out an evolution path — LLMs → Prompts → Agents → Graphs — and argues prompting is going away, with Graphs as the only thing left standing.
His framing:
- A prompt gets you one answer and forgets the job
- An agent finishes the job but forgets what it learned
- A graph keeps every finished job and turns it into the starting point for the next one
The companion article 'Loops and Graphs' covers combining loops with graphs so you stop babysitting agents and only approve the final step.
