AI researcher: chance frontier LLMs are conscious is 'above zero, below fifty percent'
dioscuri · x · 2026-10-09
In an X exchange, researcher dioscuri answered three questions on LLM consciousness and welfare:
- Likelihood frontier LLMs are conscious: declined to give a number, but put it at "higher than zero and less than fifty" percent.
- Do we know what affects model welfare?: understanding here is "very poorly" developed; cited work from Jack Lindsey's lab as the best available research.
- Are welfare-reducing actions like switching models off justified?: some welfare costs are justifiable for global safety, but we should minimise them.
