OpenAI says it provides tools, not solutions — while pouring millions in compute into solving them

Epidemiologist Sasha Gusev notes OpenAI issued PR statements claiming it only wants to "provide tools, not solve problems," yet has plowed millions of dollars of compute into actually doing science. He argues it's worth examining whether this has negative first-order effects on the research community.
Rex Douglass quipped that every such post boils down to the dog-with-a-stick meme: "No take. Only throw" — a jab at OpenAI's tension between its tools-not-solutions rhetoric and its eagerness to do research itself.
